Former Chief Justice of India and Chairman, United Nations Human
Rights Committee delivered an extension lecture on "Expanding
Horizons of Human Rights- Indian Judiciary's Response" at KIIT
Law School. Eminent Jurist and father of Public Interest Litigation
in India appreciated efforts of Dr Achuta Samanta, founder of KIIT
and KISS in bringing tribals to the national main stream. He expressed
the hope that the KIIT Law School would soon emerge an excellent
centre of legal education. He expressed his satisfaction on curricula
of the school. He urged the students of law school to join the legal
profession as lawyers and judges and keep in mind sufferings of
the common people.
Recalling his path breaking judgments particularly Maneka Gandhi's
case, Living legend of Indian Judiciary reiterated that "arbitrariness
is antithesis of equality." In response to a query by a law
student, Justice Bhagwati justified judicial activism and said if
legislature crosses its limits, Constitution enjoins a duty on the
judiciary to fulfill its duty of preserving and protecting constitution.
Constitutional Advisor to more than two dozen countries, Justice
Bhagwati also talked about violations of human rights of underprivileged
people. Referring to his historical decision in Bandhua Mukti Morcha
case where he released 10,000 bonded laborers in Andhra Pradesh,
he said right to life does not mean mere animal existence but includes
right to live with human dignity.
Justice Bhagwati who had delivered 1200 judgments as judge of the
Supreme Court also dwelled upon on his decisions wherin he revolutionarised
the concept of locus standi. He also recalled how even postcards
written by public spirited citizens were treated by him as petitions
and orders issued on them. He lamented on the state of affairs whereby
millions of Indians still live in abject poverty and denial of fundamental
freedoms and appreciated the efforts of civil society in the protection
of their human rights. "we need many more Dr Samantas to spread
education amongst the downtrodden people', said Bhagwati while addressing
the 10,000 tribal children in KISS.
Prof. Faizan Mustafa, in his welcome address paid rich tributes
to Justice Bhagwati for his path breaking judgments and for converting
the Supreme Court of India into people's court. Due to Justice Bhagwati,
court started taking sufferings of people seriously, said Prof.
Mustafa.

Prof. N.R. Madava Menon, Chairman, Equal Opportunity Commission, Government
of India and former Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore and Kolkota Law Schools
delivered an extension lecture in the KIIT Law School on "Emerging
Challenges of Terrorism & Criminal Justice System in India".
The eminent jurists advocated the case of balancing the national
security with that of citizens liberties and rejected over emphasis
on civil liberties which have an adverse impact on the national
security and prevention of criminality. The founder Director of
National Judicial Academy also lamented on the delays in the criminal
trial and the poor investigation and police structure of the country.
Prof. Menon emphasized the need of urgent reforms in the police
system of the country including abolition of police constabulary
from the police. Prof. Menon paid rich tributes to the founder of
KIIT University for establishing a tribal school and commended the
work of Dr. A. Samanta in bringing tribals to the national mainstream.
He expressed the hope that if the students of KIIT Law School work
for 8 to 10 hours a day, they will be able to have extremely bright
and exciting future for themselves. Prof. Hari Goutam, Chancellor
who presided over the lecture expressed his dissatisfaction on the
non-implementation of laws and said that the state should come on
heavily on those who indulge in terrorists activities.

Mr. Navin B. Chawla, Election Commissioner of India delivered an
extension lecture at the KIIT Law School on "Electoral Reforms
in India". Mr. Chawla emphasized the need of achieving higher
voting percentage and persuaded students to convince others to participate
in the electoral process of the country.
The Election Commissioner of India also emphasized the need of
achieving the ideals of compulsory voting for every citizen above
the age of 18 years. He appreciated the efforts of election commission
in doing remarkable job for the macro management of election in
the world's largest democracy and expressed the hope that sooner
than later Indian democracy will match with major democracies of
the west in terms of best electoral practices. In response to questions
from the students of the KIIT Law School as to corrupt electoral
practices, Mr. Chawla cited the example from Tamil Nadu where an
ambulance was used for the transfer of money and a milkman instead
of selling milk was found distributing liquor. Mr. Chawla paid rich
tributes to the founder of the KIIT and KISS and assured his full
support to the cause of downtrodden-tribal children and while addressing
the tribal students, he also expressed his willingness to teach
them after his retirement. Mr. Navin B. Chawla also spoke at a length
as to the powers of the Election Commission, the model code of conduct
and its utility and usefulness and other areas of concern as to
the electoral reforms. In response to the question as to the right
to vote of transgender people and eunuchs, Mr. Chawla assured that
he would look into these issues.
Presiding over the lecture, Professor Hari Goutam, former Chairman,
University Grants Commission & Chancellor, KIIT University expressed
the hope that the electoral reforms would be carried out with utmost
sincerity under Mr. Chawla's stewardship. Earlier Mr. Chawla was
welcomed by Dr. A. Samanta, founder KIIT and KISS who thanked Mr.
Chawla for finding time to address the students of KIIT Law School
and expressed his sincere thanks for Mr. Chawla's patronage of KISS.

KIIT Law School organized the 1st Justice Y.V. Chandrachud Memorial
Lecture in the memory of former Chief Justice of India who remained
Chief Justice of India for almost 7 years. The lecture was delivered
by Hon'ble Justice Dr. Arijit Pasayat, Senior Judge, Supreme Court
of India. Justice Pasayat appreciated KIIT Law School and its found
Dr. A. Samanta and paid reach tributes to Justice Y.V. Chandrachud.
"Protection of Environment is an Imperative Duty of the State
and the responsibility of each and every individual", said
Justice Pasayat. He also dwelled upon the anxiety of Supreme Court
of India in ensuring protection of environment and advocated a balanced
approach between preservation of environment and development needs
of the society. Justice Pasayat said that nature never betrays us
and therefore we should similarly not betray it. Man is nature's
best promise and worst enemy.
Prof. Moochand Sharma, an eminent scholar of Law and Vice-Chairman,
University Grants Commission who was the Chief Guest on the occasion
also highlighted some unknown facets of Justice Y.V. Chandrachud's
life particularly his commitment to human values. He also recalled
that how apologetic Justice Y.V. Chandrachud was about his decision
in ADM-Jabalpur case during emergency. Prof. Moolchand Sharma observed
that Justice Pasayat is the right person to deliver Y.C. Chandrachud
Memorial Lecture as be combines in himself all the qualities of
what he termed of a "Perfect Judge". Prof. Moolchand Sharma
also advocated use of law as a tool for social engineering and assured
the students of KIIT Law School that they are not only at par with
other National Law Universities but they can do much better if they
continue to devote themselves to academic pursuits with utmost dedication,
sincerity and commitment.
Prof. Moolchand Sharma appreciated the work of Dr. A. Samanta particularly
in respect of 7000 tribal students in KISS and emphasized that Dr.
Samanta is in fact role model because he is not only committed to
the education of tribal students but has taken upon his shoulders
the responsibility of ensuring their dignity, autonomy and preservation
of their culture & ethos. Prof. Moolchand Sharma compared Dr.
Samanta with Mr. Bill Gates and in fact went on to say that Mr.
Bill Gates started social service after earning huge fortunes for
himself and his company and Dr. Samanta is a shade better because
he started giving back to the society when he did not have anything
even for himself.
The lecture was presided over by Prof. Hari Goutam, former Chairman,
University Grants Commission and the Chancellor of KIIT University
and was attended by eminent persons from all walks of life.
